My prime interest is in the transition or division between different areas of colour, tone and light..  Previously a painter of purely abstract works, outside influences have become important over the last few years. Inspiration is distilled from landscapes and also recently, interiors. Mood and atmosphere have always been central to my painting, as has a formal minimal aesthetic. The paintings often have a quietness and openness to them as this is what I gravitate towards. Colour is limited to a subtle palette and use is made of very simple forms and light applications of paint. The transitions of colour translate into horizontal bands, which order the composition. Elements of places are memorised and brought back to the studio, where the painting dictates and strives to become an independent identity, while holding onto an element of the original mood.
